What to Do in Medellin in 3 Days: The Complete Itinerary

· By the Andia Experiences team

Three days are enough to understand Medellin: why it is called the city of eternal spring, how it went from the most dangerous city in the world to a model of social urbanism, and why people who come tend to stay longer than planned. This is the itinerary we recommend to everyone who asks, with what is worth it and in the order that works.

Day 1: downtown and the history

Start downtown. Plaza Botero, with its 23 sculptures, is the classic starting point and sits next to the Museo de Antioquia, where you understand who Botero was and why he gave his work to the city. From there, walk to Parque Berrío and the metro station.

The Medellin metro is not just transport: it is the symbol of the city's transformation. Ride the metrocable up to Santo Domingo and you will see how the city climbs the hillsides. At the top are the Parque Biblioteca España and views that explain Medellin better than any book.

In the evening, head to El Poblado or Laureles for dinner. If you want to do all this with context, our private Medellin city tour covers the route in half a day with a historian guide.

Day 2: Comuna 13 and the viewpoints

Comuna 13 is the most popular visit in the city, and rightly so. The outdoor escalators, the graffiti and the neighbourhood's stories make more sense with someone from there. Go in the morning for fewer people, or in the afternoon for atmosphere and music. See our private Comuna 13 tour.

In the afternoon, go up to the viewpoints: Cerro Nutibara and Pueblito Paisa for the daytime view, and the Las Palmas viewpoint for sunset and the city lights. It is the best possible end to day two.

Day 3: Guatapé and the Peñol rock

Save the third day for leaving the city. Guatapé is two hours away and is the most beautiful day trip in Antioquia: the climb up the Peñol rock (740 steps, half an hour at a calm pace), the reservoir with its islands and the town of painted zócalos. Leave early to beat the queues.

If time allows, finish with a chocolate workshop or a boat ride on the reservoir. Our Guatapé from the heart day trip includes both, in groups of up to 4 people.

Practical tips

  • Weather: 22–24 °C (72–75 °F) all year. Bring something for rain; Medellin gets showers that pass quickly.
  • Where to stay: El Poblado for restaurants and nightlife; Laureles for a quieter, more local neighbourhood.
  • Getting around: metro and ride-hailing apps. For Guatapé, private transport or a bus from Terminal del Norte.
  • Safety: Medellin is a safe city today for anyone who moves around sensibly. Read our guide to safety in Medellin.

What if I have more days?

With four or five days, add a food tour and an evening of music. With nine, combine Medellin with the Coffee Region and Cartagena: that is exactly our Feel Colombia package.
